How to do brow Lamination
Beauty trends come and go, but a great bold eyebrow is forever. Face-framing and statement-making, full brows are classic and—unlike the pencil-thin look of the ’90s—easier to maintain in your daily beauty routine. But you might have heard of a new take on the
bold-brow look that’s been taking social media by storm: eyebrow lamination.“Brow lamination is the hottest new trend that transforms any brow into a full, fluffy supermodel brow,” says celebrity brow artist Rene de la Garza. Unlike microblading or microshading, there is no tattooing or needles involved—but it’s not exactly risk-free either. Keep reading to learn just what this new brow trend is, how it works, and everything else there is to know before you try it for the first time.
About the Expert:
Rene de la Garza is a celebrity brow artist, facialist, and founder of Brow Down Studio in Los Angeles.
What is brow lamination?
A semi-permanent treatment, brow lamination is essentially a perm for your brows. “It is a chemical treatment that manipulates the internal bonds of the hair follicle to sculpt the brows in a straighter, stylized direction,” explains de la Garza. Not only does the resulting effect look fashion-magazine chic, but it also “allows [for] versatility in your brow styling,” according to the brow artist. Oh, and did we mention the process is vegan?
Like a perm or keratin treatment, it offers similar styling benefits for your brow hairs as it does for the hair on your head—i.e., keeping everything in place. “It’s great for brows that grow in different directions, have gaps that need disguising, or just won't stay put,” says de la Garza. Oh, we can relate.
What happens during brow lamination?
Before the brow lamination process begins, you’ll have a consultation with your brow artist to touch base about everything you want—for instance, whether or not you want to add tinting to your service as well. Then, “a series of solutions are applied to the brow area to make the brows pliable and sculptable. Once the pH of the brows is raised to the perfect level, the brows are manipulated and styled in the [correct] direction,” de la Garza explains. She goes on to say that “Following the chemical process, the brows are trimmed and groomed by either wax or tweezers.” (If this sounds familiar, that may be because the process isn’t unlike a lash lift.)
To ensure the new shape stays put, “A final conditioning sealant is placed on the brows that will stay on for 24 hours,” says de la Garza, who stresses that no water should touch the brows during that time to “fully allow the brow shape to set.”
Is there any aftercare?
After the initial 24-hour no-water period, you and your fluffy brows are pretty much good to go. “There is very little upkeep!” says de la Garza. To keep brows moisturized, you can condition them with castor oil or another hydrating brow oil as part of your nightly skincare routine.
How long does brow lamination last?
“You can laminate your brows every six weeks,” says de la Garza, who stresses, “No sooner.” After all, overprocessing could be damaging to both your actual eyebrow hairs and the delicate skin around your eyes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get other brow treatments, such as a brow tint or shaping, should the need arise in the meantime. “If you feel like you need a brow clean-up in between, you can definitely come back in,” says de la Garza.
What does it cost?
Depending on the brow artist and location, brow lamination can cost between $75–$250, according to de la Garza. As with all beauty treatments, be sure to check reviews, before-and-after photos, and credentials to make sure your brow artist is qualified before booking.
Can I DIY brow lamination at home?
Officially, no. “Do not, I repeat, do not try to laminate your own brows at home!” says de la Garza. “The risks of this treatment done improperly could damage your brows and skin (long term!). Leave it to the professionals.”
The good news is you can copy the style temporarily using a few handy brow products you might already have. “To achieve the look of a laminated brow, opt for a heavy-hold brow gel,” recommends de la Garza.
